Abdomen

Most of the digestive processes occur within the abdominal cavity. The abdominal wall is split into the posterior (back), lateral (sides) and anterior (front) walls. There is a common set of layers covering and forming all the walls: the deepest being the extra-peritoneal fat, the parietal peritoneum, a layer of fascia and a system of abdominal muscles. The alimentary tract in the abdomen consists of the lower oesophagus, the stomach, the duodenum, the jejunum, ileum, the cecum, the appendix, the ascending, transverse and descending colons, the sigmoid colon and the rectum. Other vital organs inside the abdomen include the liver, the kidneys, the pancreas and the spleen.

Abdominal muscles

In the abdominal cavity, are three layers of muscle: the rectus abdominus, the transverse, and the internal and external oblique.

Allergens

Proteins are often the cause of allergic reactions to certain foods. This is because the structure of each form of protein is slightly different; some may trigger a response from the immune system while others remain perfectly safe. Many people are allergic to casein, the protein in milk; gluten, the protein in wheat and other grains; the proteins found in nuts, or those in shellfish or other seafoods. It is very unusual to have a negative reaction to more than two different types of proteins due to the diversity between protein or amino acid types.

According to a Tufts University Medical Letter article, the following eight foods cause 90 per cent of all allergic reactions: Dairy, Soy, Wheat, Peanuts, Tree nuts (such as almonds, cashews, pecans, and walnuts), Fish, Shellfish, Eggs.
